Disability History: Bernadette Rivard, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

Bernadette Rivard was born with cerebral palsy in 1931. Unlike many children with disabilities who were institutionalized, her family raised her at home and included her in community life. As she got older, her family was unable to help care for her and she moved into a nursing home for the older adults at the age of 31. What is remarkable is that Bernadette lived in this nursing home for more than 50 years, making her one of the longest residents of a long term care facility in Ontario.
