Ep 58: Twitter Chats

 

Today’s episode is about Twitter chats with Dawn Gibson and Alex Haagaard about the Twitter chats they lead. Twitter chats are discussions set at a particular time online using a hashtag as a way to organize and find one another. Dawn is the founder of #SpoonieChat, a community on both Twitter and Facebook. Alex is the creator of #MedTraumaChat that gives people space to share their experiences of medical neglect and abuse. You’ll learn more about the origins of their Twitter chats, the utility and power of online communities, and the process and labor involved in moderating these conversations.

Dawn Gibson, best known as @DawnMGibson on Twitter, is a well-known patient advocate and e-patient, writer, and patient experience consultant working in an advisory capacity with corporations, foundations, researchers, and other thought leaders to form an accurate and helpful understanding of chronic illness and disability. 

She is the founder and host of the Spoonie Chat Twitter and Facebook communities, regularly fields questions posted to Twitter and the #SpoonieChat tag between events, and works to connect patients with essential self-care concepts, appropriate advocacy organizations, and each other.

Alex Haagaard is a disabled and genderqueer designer, writer and activist. Alex has narcolepsy, mast cell activation syndrome, hypermobile spectrum disorder and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. They received the latter three of these diagnoses last year—26 years after they first started experiencing symptoms. Alex is passionate about health justice, and believes that medicine has a serious consent problem. They created #MedTraumaChat in 2016, to provide people with a much-needed space to share their own experiences of medical neglect and abuse.
