Today’s episode features an interview with Liz Carr, an actor, activist and comedian based in the UK. I first listened to Liz when she was a co-host for the BBC Ouch podcast with Mat Fraser. Hearing two disabled people cackle and joke was a revelation many years ago. There’s no doubt in my mind that Liz and Mat influenced me as a podcaster on how important it is to have disabled people in conversation together. You’ll hear Liz talk about her acting career and the challenges she faces in fighting for characters and storylines that matter. We also discuss her lead role as crippy smartass forensic examiner Clarissa Mullery in BBC’s long running drama, Silent Witness.

Liz Carr describes herself as an actor, activist and comedian. As a UK based, wheelchair user, she is currently best known for her lead role in the BBC’s long running forensic drama, Silent Witness where she’s played the smart ass forensic examiner Clarissa Mullery for the past 7 series. She also played Marlow Rhodes in the Netflix show, The OA Part 2 and she has a number of other tv and film parts coming up this year and next. But perhaps her favourite job ever and the one Liz is most known for within the crip community is when she co-hosted the BBC Ouch! podcast with Mat Fraser from 2006 – 2013. Training with Graeae theatre company, Liz has and continues to wheel the boards doing bits of theatre, she co-created the Disabled / Deaf women’s comedy group Nasty Girls, broke her stand-up cherry with Abnormally Funny People and as a member of the Not Dead Yet network, she’s a passionate and vocal opponent of the legalisation of physician assisted suicide.
